What casinos do with your ID and how to send it without taking risks

Your data · before, during and after you send it

Not wanting to send a photo of your ID to a casino site is sensible. But if the casino holds a licence and its rules ask for it, the alternative is not to look for a trick: it is to send it properly. Only when it is due, only from your own account, marked, and with nothing extra thrown in. And to know what to do with that data when you close the account.

A copy of your document is valuable data. With it, somebody could try to open accounts in your name or pass themselves off as you. That is why looking for a casino without ID makes sense. And it is why, when a licensed casino does ask for the document, it is worth sending it with your head on.

Before uploading a photo of your ID, look at who is asking and why: verification happens once, on the casino's own site, never over chat or by email.

Why they ask

Casinos licensed in Curaçao or Anjouan have to confirm the identity and the age of their customers before paying, and to watch that the money is not being laundered. That is why every set of rules we have read keeps the right to ask for papers. What separates one casino from another is not whether it asks, but when, and how it treats what it receives.

What the casino does with your document, in principle:

Many casinos do not run the verification themselves but through a specialist provider that receives the images from the form. It is usually named in the privacy policy.

Before sending: three checks

  1. Does the casino hold a licence? Look its domain up in the register. If it is not there, send nothing. We show you how in checking a licence.
  2. Do its rules ask for this? Find the verification clause in the terms. If there is no clause and somebody is asking over chat, be suspicious.
  3. Is there a privacy policy? Look at who controls the data, whether a verification provider is used, and how to get in touch to exercise your rights.

While sending: five rules

  1. Only from your own account, in the verification section of the casino's own site. Never by email, chat, WhatsApp or Telegram.
  2. Only what the clause names. If a document and an address are asked for, do not throw in photos of your card because an agent suggested it.
  3. Mark the copy. A semi-transparent watermark, on the diagonal, reading «Copy for verification at [casino], [date]». Without covering data or the photograph: an unreadable copy gets refused. If the form wants the photo taken live from the camera, you will not be able to mark it, and that is normal.
  4. No keys, ever. No legitimate process asks for your wallet's seed phrase or the passwords to your bank or exchange.
  5. Keep proof of what you sent: a screenshot with the date and the state of the verification.

At Vave you sign up with an email and a password, uploading nothing. If a verification comes, it comes later, at the cashier, under clause 8.7 of its terms.

Signs that this is not a verification

  • Somebody writes to you first, through a channel that is not the casino's own site, claiming to be «support» or «the security department».
  • You are asked to deposit more money to «verify» or «unlock» the account.
  • The site where you are uploading the document is not the casino's, or the domain changes at the last step.
  • You are rushed with threats: «send it within the hour or lose your balance».

If that happens, send nothing, change your account password, and write to the casino from its official site to confirm.

Afterwards: when you close the account

If you stop playing at a casino, close the account and look after your data:

  1. Withdraw the whole balance before asking for closure.
  2. Ask for closure in writing from support and keep the confirmation.
  3. Ask about your data: what they keep, what for, and for how long. The privacy contact is in their policy. Some data has to be kept for a period under the obligations of their licence; ask them to say which.
  4. Ask for deletion of everything they are not required to keep.
  5. Delete your own end: bookmarks, apps and the casino's address in your wallet.

The best-protected data is the data you never send

The safest way to protect your document is to know in advance when it will be asked for and to decide before depositing. That is why our turn board orders the casinos by what their rules say about papers. If you would rather send nothing, pick casinos that say so clearly and start with a small test withdrawal. And if you do decide to send, prepare the papers properly with the guide to proof of address and selfie.

Questions readers ask

Why does a casino want my ID?
To confirm you are who you say, that you are of age, and that the money leaving goes to the account holder. Licensed casinos are required by their regulators to run those checks before paying.
How do I put a watermark on a copy of my ID?
With any photo editor or watermark app: write «Copy for verification at [casino], [date]» across the image, diagonally and semi-transparent, without covering the data or the photograph.
Can I ask for my ID to be deleted when I close the account?
You can ask in writing at the casino's privacy contact, usually named in its privacy policy. Some have to keep certain data for a period under the obligations of their licence; ask them to tell you what they keep and for how long.
